In reading about Kendall and Gwendolyn Myers and their secret life as Communist spies, the words to the most famous verse to Sir Walter Scott's poem, Lay of the Minstrel,came to my mind:
Breathes there the man, with soul so dead,
Who never to himself hath said,
"This is my own, my native land!"
Whose heart hath ne'er within him burned,
As home his footsteps he hath turned,
From wandering on a foreign strand!
If such there breathe, go, mark him well;
For him no Minstrel raptures swell;
High though his titles, proud his name,
Boundless his wealth as wish can claim;
Despite those titles, power, and pelf,
The wretch, concentred all in self,
Living, shall forfeit fair renown,
And, doubly dying, shall go down
To the vile dust, from whence he sprung,
Unwept, unhonoured, and unsung.
I don't know what they were paid to sell out their homeland or if they just did it out of shear hatred for the country that gave them free birth and the freedom to choose their path. I don't know what kind of guilt filled their minds and destroyed their souls. He was a blueblood, born into money. It's all part of the idiotic, rich-white-guilt syndrome that affects so many liberals. You can just feel it oozing out of this passage in his diary:
"I have become so bitter these past few months. Watching the evening news is a radicalizing experience," he wrote in his diary in 1978, referring to what he described as greedy U.S. oil companies, inadequate health care and "the utter complacency of the oppressed" in America. On a trip to Cuba, federal law enforcement officials said in legal filings, Myers found a new inspiration: the communist revolution.
And as with most wealthy liberal people, they feel guilty because they have so much, but are not willing to give up their life of money and privilege. Rather than slough off their wealth and help people using their own money, they assuage their guilt by demanding that the government do the job. They were good little liberals who felt that the mean old US Government should be taught a lesson.
Their plan was to eventually sail to Cuba where they would presumably be given some kind of hero's welcome.
The couple told the agent they eventually wanted to sail to Cuba, according to the court documents.
"Our idea," said Kendall Myers, "is to sail home."
The fact never probably occurred to them that that no one, not even their new country (had they made it), would ever really trust them. If they'd sell out their country once, they might do it again.
Now, home will be a federal prison somewhere. They will most likely die there. It's unfortunate that it probably will not be at the hand of the executioner, because at 72 and 71, they don't have that much longer on this earth. Whatever time is allotted them, they will face it alone, each in their individual cell. Their boat, their nice home, their cars and their life together will be memories. Their graves should be in a prison cemetery.
The last six lines of the verse should be on their tombstones if they have one:
HERE LIES #202 and 123
Despite those titles, power, and pelf,
The [wretches], concentred all in self,
Living, shall forfeit fair renown,
And, doubly dying, shall go down
To the vile dust, from whence [they] sprung,
Unwept, unhonoured, and unsung.
No names and no dates. They deserve no more; they probably deserve much less. Such should be the fate of the traitor.
