Do you remember back not too long ago, a number of people on the left were saying that President Bush would not leave office by choice. They believed that he was going to pull some kind of phony attack, declare a state of emergency, halt the election and become the dictator he always wanted to be. Other scenarios had the omnipotent Karl Rove somehow rigging the 2008 election and to have a Bush surrogate (a la Putin/Medvedev) take office.
An example would be Harvey Wasserman and Bob Fitrakis, writing at CommonDreams.org. Common dreams isn't as big as the PuffHo, but they are a popular destination for the whine wine and canapé liberalés.
On July 31st, 2007, Mssrs. Wasserman and Fitrakis wrote:
It is time to think about the "unthinkable."
The Bush Administration has both the inclination and the power to cancel the 2008 election.
The GOP strategy for another electoral theft in 2008 has taken clear shape, though we must assume there is much more we don't know.
But we must also assume that if it appears to Team Bush/Cheney/Rove that the GOP will lose the 2008 election anyway (as it lost in Ohio 2006) we cannot ignore the possibility that they would simply cancel the election. Those who think this crew will quietly walk away from power are simply not paying attention.
Wasserman and Fitrakis, in their diseased little brains, then go on to describe some past Presidents and their abuses. Surprisingly, they mention FDR forcing Japanese Americans into internment camps. They also assert that Halliburton is (was) in the process of building concentration camps for recalcitrant liberals.
It's too bad that you can't go to these dweebs and point out to them that Bush just handed the keys to the White House to the new President Obama. There were no shenanigans, no 9/11-esque attacks, and no camps. Power transferred as it has 43 other times, peacefuly and lawfully.
I'm sure that they would have some harebrained excuse, but it would at least be amusing to hear it.

Bush was very graceful and respectful to Obama as he transitioned power. It's too bad Obama couldn't return the courtesy as he read is inauguration speech. He's even turned the White House website into a Bash Bush forum.

Oh, but wait, VW, there's MORE:
From WorldNetDaily:
"As Inauguration Day approaches and Barack Obama prepares to assume his first term as president, some in Congress are hoping to make it possible for the Democrat to not only seek a second term in office, but a third and fourth as well."
