If you pay much attention to politics, you will hear the Democrats haul out one of their favorite platforms: taxing the rich and helping "working families". It the same old populist pablum they've been spewing for eons. Sticking it to the rich guy is a major theme in Democrat demagoguery.
The truth is quite different. Sure, they want the rich to pay more in income taxes, but they want you to not get a break either. In fact, they look for ways to tax the hell out of the poor through taxes called "sin taxes". They like sin taxes because they can raise a lot of money and it's on things that they say they really don't want us to do like smoking or drinking. They don't really mean that because they need us to buy tobacco and alcohol so that the tax revenues keep flowing.
The new sin is driving. A democrat in Congress thinks you drive too much. He thinks you need to cut back and if you don't, he is going to slap a fifty cents per gallon federal tax on every gallon of gas.
A Michigan congressman wants to put a 50-cent tax on every gallon of gasoline to try to cut back on Americans' consumption.
Polls show that a majority of Americans support policies that would reduce greenhouse gases. But when it comes to paying for it, it's a different story.
Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., wants to help cut consumption with a gas tax but some don't agree with the idea, according to a new poll by the National Center for Public Policy Research.
A gas tax only hurts the poor and those so-called working families. They are the ones that will have to find the extra money to fill their tank so they can go to work or look for a job, go to the supermarket and take their kids to the doctor or school, etc. It's me and people like me, blue collar guys with a mortgage and a family.
There will also be other fall out. Dingbat Dingell represents an area that is south and west of Detroit to include Ann Arbor and all the way down to the Ohio border. There are a lot of GM, Ford and Chrysler employees in his district. These are folks that make the cars and trucks and their parts to keep them running. Dingell's tax will pout a lot of his constituents out of a job.
Oil, whether we like it or not, is the life blood of our economy. There is literally nothing you touch, taste, see, hear or smell that is not in some way directly or indirectly linked to oil. Plastics, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, are just a few things that are derived directly from petroleum. Your food, clothes, books, paper, and anything else you have is there because a truck hauled it to the store and you drove it home. Everything is more expensive now because of the price of oil. Just wait until Dingell gets done and watch what is tax on gasoline does for prices.
Think about what gas prices are already doing for the economy. This ran the same day (Yesterday) as Dingell's proposal from MSNBC:
The slow and seemingly inexorable rise in gas prices over the past two years has reached a fever pitch in recent months. That's taking its toll on many Americans, especially when coupled with weakness in the housing market and increasing costs for things like groceries. Faced with paying more at the pump, some say they are cutting back on restaurant outings, shutting off cable or Internet access, paring clothing budgets and even scrimping on necessities such as food.
Since people aren't going out as much, the restaurants cut back, stores cut back, and no one buys cars. And an extra 50 cents a gallon helps this how? Sure, I know, you liberals think we use too much. The problem is, when we don't, the economy goes down the tubes and you complain because you are out of work. Economy 101, liberals: Peeople sell things, people buy things. When people can't afford to buy things, those who sell can't buy which means those who make things like cars and airplanes don't sell them to the sellers which means they don't have a job to buy things.
And you know that the rich people will not cut back. Why should they? Do you think Dingell will cut back? Do you think he drives a Prius or one of those little deathtraps otherwise called a smart car?
Nope, this is a tax on the poor. If you elect democrats this fall, you will be voting to to tax the poor and turn working families into jobless families.
