So Congress is asking the Justice Department to investigate whether Roger Clemens lied to them or not. Talk about important business!
WASHINGTON - Roger Clemens’ denial of steroid use warrants further investigation, Congress said Wednesday in asking the Justice Department to determine whether the star pitcher lied under oath in testimony to a House committee.
House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman Henry Waxman and ranking Republican Tom Davis sent a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, urging more scrutiny of Clemens’ statements in a Feb. 5 sworn deposition and at a Feb. 13 public hearing where he said he “never used anabolic steroids or human growth hormone.”
I used to be a huge baseball fan back when I was a kid. I followed the Detroit Tigers for years and still cast an occasional glance at their stats. Guys like Al Kaline, Willie Horton and Norm Cash were the guys we idolized.
I guess we should have known that at some point performance enhancing drugs would be used and maybe they did even back then. Who knows.
The point to this is that regardless of when they started using them or if Roger Clemens used them, it isn't a Congressional matter. It's a baseball and law enforcement problem.
One would think that with a war going on, with terrorists looking to attack us and the economy starting to head for points south, there would be a lot more import things for the Congress to investigate.
No wonder this country is in the trouble it's in.
VW

WHAT no Bill Freehand, Mickey Stanley, or Denny McLain (at least until he got a big head).
I look at it where yes if he did take them he broke LEAGUE rules steriods and HGH are legal if prescribed by a doctor. If you or I were to break a bone now guess what they would load us up with the stuff.
For multi-million a year contracts, win at all costs mentality, and egos the size of the planet its no wonder these guys are looking for any edge or to extend the career for just one more year.
I am conflicted with congress getting involved. No they really have no business sticking their nose into it but it does keep them from sticking their hand in my pocket.

Performance enhancing drugs is real misnomer. Steroids don't make you a better hitter, catcher, give you better hand eye coordination , or a super pitcher. They will enhance an already existing strength training regime, and thats it. Sucking down steroids with out proper excercise or supervision will only make you fat and impotent not a god of baseball. If they have used steroids then they had baseball skills to begin with, they just got a little stronger.
Becoming as strong as the musclmen on TV using steroids is simply not an option for baseball players. It still takes years of work consuming many hours a day to be the professionals we see on Mr Universe. Baseball players just cannot afford that much time on or off training.
And what does being stronger in baseball mean anyways? About jack. Most of baseball is about speed, how fast you can throw, how fast you can swing a bat and how fast can you run. Wich is mostly based off practice, repititon and the natural development of short fiber muscle, not brute Strength.
Anyways I'll get off my soapbox, you're right. Congress has a lot more important issues they should be looking at.

That congress got involved with this just pisses me off to no end. Is congress investigating drug use by movie and rock stars? Are they investigating the drinking habits of auto and steel workers? It's none of their business.
At the most Clemons took prescription drugs without a prescription.
In the case of Barry Bonds, he may have taken steroids but it still take SKILL to hit a 95 mph fastball; something 99.999% of Americans can't do.
