On Thursday, Mitt Romney will make a speech about religion and liberty. Because Governor Romney is a Latter Day Saint, there are some people (especially some evangelicals) that do not look upon those in the LDS Church as being Christian. Consequently, many of them will vote against Romney for no other reason than they disagree with his beliefs.
Many of these people consider themselves "strict Constitutionalists", but they seem to want to completely throw out Article VI. Let me quote the relevant part of Article VI:
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.
Simply put, religion, or a lack thereof, is not a factor. Even Muslims who are citizens and meet whatever other qualifications (age, residency etc.) are free to seek elective office as well.
Some people are questioning Mitt's timing. Some are looking forward to what he has to say.
Me, I'm just disappointed that in 2007, he has to even make that speech. Is it any different than not voting for someone because of race or gender?
At this point in the game, I'm supporting Fred Thompson. But if Fred drops out, I'll support Romney.
(Full disclosure – I was LDS for many years, but no longer attend and in fact I attend a mainstream protestant denomination. I do not hate Mormons, nor do I see them as any kind of threat)

JFK, being a Catholic, had the same problem when he ran for president. My concern with Romney is his flip-flop on abortion and gun control. And, as I mentioned before, he was elected governor by the same people who continually reelect Ted Kennedy and John Kerry. But, he's much better than Hillary or Obama.

That's true, on the other hand, common sense can occasionally prevail.

I will never understand how many people vote - often against their own personnal interests and beliefs. But, this discussion about Romney's faith is disgustingly bigotted.
