SEATTLE (AP) - A group of local residents have committed to eat only food grown within 100 miles of home for the month of August, which means they've given up coffee, bananas, pineapples and most processed foods from cereal to crackers.
The experiment is supposed to give people a taste of what it means to support local farmers and businesses, while eating food that is fresher, healthier and better tasting. They're also reducing the use of fossil fuels to ship the food and avoiding international food safety concerns.
Before the invention of the internal combustion engine, you were pretty much stuck with eating whatever was grown in your local area. Today, we have fresh fruits and vegetables in season all year long. We have fresh dairy products, meat, poultry and seafood when and where we want it.
Now I have no problem with any idiot that wants to do this. So long as these idiots don't try and force this on other people, they are free to eat what they want. As far as safety, I don't think there is a significant problem out there.
I am not changing anything. Of course, at the moment, I have no choice in the matter. I have to eat at restaurants being on the road.

I've heard of people doing that around the Kansas City area too. I like to buy locally grown and produced things too. Mainly, I'd rather my money go into the local area and not. But, I'm thankful for California and Argentina in the winter months because I like fresh produce.
