Key House Democrats plan to insist the Pentagon shut down the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and are contemplating the relocation of many of the 385 or so remaining terrorist suspects to military brigs along the East Coast -- including Quantico, Va., and Charleston, S.C.
"It sets us back in the war on terrorism to be maintaining Guantanamo," said Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), who's heading an investigation of the facility for the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.
Yep, they want them moved into military brigs along the East Coast. These guys aren't two-bit criminals nor are they there for unpaid parking tickets. These guys are hard corps terrorists It's true that not all of them were caught in violent acts, but all of them were put in Gitmo for their involvement in terrorism in one form or another.
A Democratic official involved in developing the Guantanamo strategy said the Democrats, who control the new Congress, expect Republicans to object to bringing the detainees onto U.S. soil because their attorneys would surely argue they were entitled to myriad new rights.
The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Democrats are planning hearings in April or May to "build a record" that closing Guantanamo would be beneficial and that it would be legal, as well as logistically feasible, to bring its detainees to the United States. The hearings would start with panels of lawyers, some of whom are convinced the plan is workable and some of whom represent detainees now at Guantanamo.
In other words, they would cease to be enemy combatants. Their intent is to try them like criminals and try them like criminals. These people are not being treated poorly at Gitmo. Congressman after congressman has visited Gitmo. Even Moran (D - anti-Semite) hads been there and he knows this.
The Gitmo detainees are enemy combatants and therefore are not entitled to the same rights as criminals. The courts and Congress have already established that fact. We alos do not need these guys on our home turf. If they escape Gitmo, it's a quite a swim to get here. If they escape the brig at Norfolk, they are in your town.
Part of the problem with the Democrats is that they think fighting terror is a law enforcement task. It is, in many cases, if the terrorists are here, but when they are not on US soil, they are enemy combatants and deserve only the minimum of human treatment.

The prisoners at Gitmo receive better food and medical care than many American Citizens. Personally, I think they've got it too good at Gitmo. They need to be put in tents in the middle of the desert.

If you want to give them "only the minimum of human treatment," they should be held at Building 19 at Walter Reed.

Good point Knoktaremf. It's sad when were more concerned for the well being of the enemies of our nation that the defenders of it.
The ACLU lines up to defend terrorists that have killed innocent people while Democrats in congress line up to crucify a soldier or marine who shoots an unarmed terrorist in the heat of battle.
