We Are A Nation Of Cowards
We are a nation of cowards.
We live in our sheltered little homes, with whatever passes for a family today. We go to our jobs and our drum circles and our kids play some form of non-competitive soccer. We drive our SUV and complain about oil prices.
We deify media stars and sports figures. We glamorize thugs and criminals.
More and more kids aren’t even graduating from high school. Probably half of those that do can’t read or write well enough to fill out a job application by themselves.
A kid today has to have a cell phone, a computer and a tricked out ride. They have to wear designer clothes and expensive shoes. They want a do-nothing job that will pay the freight.
We are a nation of cowards. We have no moral compass. Gangs are chic and increasingly violent. Many babies are born out of wedlock and Dad is the next guy shacking up with Mom.
We are a nation of cowards. People parade around in our streets in various stages of undress to show their “pride” or hatred for their elected leaders.
We are a nation of cowards. In the days after we were viciously attacked by Islamic terrorists, we were ready for revenge. Some of those same people now think it was our own government that attacked us.
We are a nation of cowards. Instead of securing our borders, our Congress is afraid to do what is necessary to secure our borders.
The Democrats have convinced us that the terrorists will be beaten by law enforcement methods.
We are weak. We are afraid. We have the best trained and best equipped armed forces in the world and we are so afraid that we might hurt the wrong person or destroy the wrong place; we might as well strip our troops of their weapons and armor.
It’s insane.
Wars are not fought nice and cleanly like some video game. It’s pure hell and anyone who’s been in combat will tell you it’s pure hell.
We do not have generals any more. We have administrators. We have managers. We have CEOs with stars on their shoulders.
There are no Pattons or MacArthurs, no Pershings or Shermans. We don’t have military people in charge; we have people who are in the military in charge. If there was a Patton or a MacArthur, they'd never be allowed to be in charge.
We are so afraid someone will hate us if we actually wage war. Instead, we adhere to dated rules of conduct and outmoded treaties that weaken us because our enemies don’t adhere to those rules.
I am subject to deploy as a civilian with the armed forces. I actually have a Geneva Convention card in my wallet identifying my status as a category IV. Cat IV identifies someone as a Major, Lieutenant Colonel or Colonel. If I were to ever get captured, I think I’d throw it out of my wallet.
I think I’d rather be a Category I - all ranks below NCO.
My point here is that no one we are probably going to actually go to war with is either a signer of the Geneva Convention, or has any intention of adhering to it.
It’s time we started fighting wars like we mean it, or just give up completely.
It’s no wonder North Korea and Iran laugh at us and if we quit Iraq, there will be absolutely nothing stopping them.
They will know we are a nation of cowards.

Boy was that a good post VW.
I've been so disgusted as of late. First, let me say I support President Bush and understand he is human. Some people need to remember that. But, lately, I question his desicions with this war. He seems to be catering to the politically correct. I'm sickened and disheartened. We will lose this war if this desire to be nice and "not like the enemy" doesn't get thrown in the trash.
Our soldiers are walking on egg shells. If they mess up, they too are liable to have some big boob of a congressman convince the world of their guilt before they've had even a chance for a trial.
I'm disgusted by the war. Truly there are some who are losing there support for this war based on the way we're fighting it. If we're not going to FIGHT, then bring our boys home for crying out loud. It's not fair to put them in this position.
I tend to think when it comes to terrorists, we should shoot first then ask questions later. Kill them all regardless of where they are or what they're doing.
My anger has come to a boiling point and I hope the latest news of Geneva Convention CRAP and Taliban members being excused from DEATH while at a funeral are just two "mishaps".
Maybe you could tell me why President Bush is saying he wants the Geneva Convention to apply to prisoners we should just hang? I'm not being sarcastic. Is there a reason he wants this that I'm not aware of?
Excuse me for this long rant. (I'm in a bad mood.)

A really good posting VW. I think you are right on the money. The west is soft and fat. Civilized rules do not help in the fight against the radical Islamist enemy. They will be on our shores if this keeps up and another era of the Dark Ages will be upon us. The generals of WWII must be spinning in their graves.

I afraid for our future, especially for my grandchildren. This is a clash of cultures.
I wrote this last night after thinking about the news since Setpember 11th. It's all quite depressing.
Thank you both for your kind words and Thirdee, for posting it at Code Red.

Hey, no problem VW. It's an excellent post. Unfortunately, some very talented small bloggers don't get the attention they deserve. You're one of those bloggers VW. That post was/is deserving of much more traffic than I imagine you recieve. No insult meant there. It's just everyone should read that.

This is the best article I have read all day - all week probably all month. I really hits the nail on the head. I think a lot of us are feeling this way VW.
This is going up over at BSC - I can only speak for myself - but this NEEDS to be said and said often.

VW - you should submit this to RCP.

I am afraid you are right to some degree and unfortunately bin Laden has the right strategy to fight us through the media because we are a paper tiger. Not everbody is a coward however, and the burden on the brave is all the more onerous when the cowards both despise them and rely on them for life. But lets recall the brave are really brave and may be strong enough to face the challenge without flinching. Those who see a threat and are willing to fight it have to stay together and confident and strong in the face of the overwhelming cowardace by the media, social leaders, communities and institutions.

I did not mean to imply that we are all cowards. My point is that there is so much political correctness, those who are brave, those that must fight within the burdensome constarinst of very limited warfare are reduced to almost being irrelevant.

Excellent point Jane. That is the problem, as I see it. Those who ARE willing/able to stand and deliver are having to do so in the face of untenable odds, including the sedition of the cowardace of the national institutions (politicals, media, social leaders, etc.)

We are so afraid we are willing to violate our fundamental priciples. Ends do not justify Means.

I have penned a few blogs indicating the same. It's nice to know I am not alone.
