TACOMA - The 300-member congregation's administrative council of the First United Methodist Church of Tacoma has declared itself to be a sanctuary for servicemen and servicewomen who don't want to go to Iraq.
I’ve spent some time searching the web about this. I’m not a lawyer so whatever I say is going to be based on my thoughts and beliefs rather than what the law actually says. I’m open to learn on this one.
I believe this is an empty gesture. Perhaps it might give the low-life deserter a bit of extra time before the cops bust in to arrest him, but it just doesn’t seem like the Church can actually can keep them out.
If the police have a warrant, I don’t think a church door will stop them, nor do I think it ought to be able to keep law enforcement out.
In olden days, people were usually given choices. You could either give all your money to the church and any lands you owned to the crown and leave the country forever, or face your charges.
In thinking about that for a second, perhaps that ought to be the way it should be done. If that rat turd Watada wants to give up everything to that church, hand over any land his family owns to the government and leave the country forever, I could go with that. Fair enough.

Legally they cannot do this.
