There are two days that we as a nation set aside to remember those who served in the armed forces. On November 11th, the day the armistice was signed ending WWI, we honor those living men and women who honorably served their country. Today, we honor those who are no longer with us – especially those who died in combat.
Traditionally on this day, we set aside our political differences and take a moment to honor those who served. In times of conflict or war, the sacrifices of those who gave their all are at the forefront of our thoughts.
Today is more than a politician’s speech and it is certainly more than a day to have a sale or to head out to the mountains or your favorite fishing hole. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance.
Set aside some time today to remember. Shuck the politics. Squelch the rhetoric. Take time out from what you are doing and at least take a moment and think of those veterans who willingly gave their all for you.
Let me close with the words President Ronald Reagan ended his remarks with on the 40th Anniversary of D-Day at the U.S. Ranger Monument in Pointe du Hoc, France.
“Strengthened by their courage, heartened by their valor, and borne by their memory, let us continue to stand for the ideals for which they lived and died.”
