Kat over at News, Views 'n Opinions has an interesting post up about immigration. She makes a lot of good suggestions. Usually, I agree closely with what Kat and Jon say over there and the same is true for this entry with the exception of amnesty. She says:
- *Make ALL illegals go back to the country they came from and come go through the process of coming here legally.
There are 11-12 million illegals here already. I think that would be an impossibility. First, we need to get a good start on securing the border. Then we can deal with those already here.
If someone’s been here for seven to 10 years, can speak and understand English to a level where he/she can conduct everyday life, and other than cross the border illegally, commits no crime during that period, then I amnesty should be given and the illegal be given legal status.
If a person gets picked up or stopped by the police for some offense and it is determined that their immigration status is in question, they should be held until their status is determined. If they are here legally, release them immediately. If they are here illegally, deport them immediately.
This type of thing is an outrageous:
Mayor Gavin Newsom and other city officials reinstated San Francisco as a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants Thursday, anticipating that the United States Senate would pass a bill that would criminalize over 11 million immigrants this evening.
Newsom vocalized his disapproval of House Resolution 4437 which would make all undocumented immigrants felons and require all employers to verify the immigrant statuses of their employees.
The bay area is arguably the most liberal area in the country. No city or state has a right to usurp national policy. In a case such as this, any federal legislation passed should include in clear language that if a city or state refuses to follow the law, federal funds will be withheld until they comply.
