It’s coming to light that the “secret torture prisons” might well have been a sting operation. According to an NYT story yesterday, Mary McCarthy might just be “p0wned”.
BRUSSELS, April 20 — The European Union's antiterrorism chief told a hearing on Thursday that he had not been able to prove that secret C.I.A. prisons existed in Europe.
"We've heard all kinds of allegations," the official, Gijs de Vries, said before a committee of the European Parliament. "It does not appear to be proven beyond reasonable doubt."
This, also from the NYT, is interesting:
Ms. McCarthy's departure followed an internal investigation by the C.I.A.'s Security Center, as part of an intensified effort that began in January to scrutinize employees who had access to particularly classified information. She was given a polygraph examination, confronted about answers given to the polygraph examiner and confessed, the government officials said. On Thursday, she was stripped of her security clearance and escorted out of C.I.A. headquarters. Ms. McCarthy did not reply Friday evening to messages left by e-mail and telephone.
See that line “scrutinize employees who had access to particularly classified information”? That might just mean this is an example of the old classic game of "tell certain people there is something going on, provide a little documentation to make it appear plausible", and see if it gets leaked.
So here’s the problem for the left. They want so desperately to hang a leaker in the Plame game, but now they want to give McCarthy a pass because she told something that would embarrass the Administration if true.
You can’t have it both ways, folks. I’m betting McCarthy, along with some others, were caught in a trap they gladly stepped into.
She has admitted to leaking, now prosecute her.

Prosecute her so as the MSM has no other choice but to report it. Then again... they’ll try to spin it somehow to make it seem like this too was Bush’s fault...

It is funny that Europeans can't prove that these secret facilities even existed and we have person working within our secrety apparatus telling them that they did. What I find quite troubling is that the media hides behind the veil of the public has the right to know, but they don't seem to care whether the information is actually factually accurate before they print it or broadcast it. Then they are forced to print buried retractions that no one sees.
I think Congress needs to make a change to the protection of a source law and then just maybe we wouldn't have so many people willing to leak classified information or just information no has has the right to know; like Grand Jury testimony that is being used against Barry Bonds. That is supposed to be kept secret and everyone knows it, but the MSM seems to think that as long as they get it they can print it and protect the source of the illegal leaking. I don't have a problem with Whistle blowers within our government, but the people discussing classified information with people that have no business hearing it is a completely separate issue.
