See Below for update:
There is a little kerfuffle over some comments Fox News Commentator Bill O’Reilly made concerning San Francisco and their resolution to discourage military recruiting.
Mr. O’Reilly is a bit of a blowhard in my opinion and I think he went a bit far in inviting terrorists to blow up the Coit Tower. I don’t know if he meant it or was just “bloviating” as he is wont to say (and do), but it was stupid none the less. However, I think I understand his larger point.
San Francisco’s largely liberal population sees the military not as defender, but as some kind of evil. And yeah, maybe we ought to let them fend for themselves if some sort of attack were to occur. A little reaping of what they’ve sown might do them some good.
As much as I like the idea and as good as it sounds in theory, it’s just a pipe dream. We all know, as distasteful as it might seem, we will defend San Francisco, no matter how they disparage the military.
I’m certain they would demand defense, receive it, and then turn on the defenders at the first opportunity once the danger was past. Most liberals have a visceral hatred of the military and often a basic misunderstanding of its use and command structure. They do understand that about 75% of military personnel tend to be conservative in their politics and that understanding leads to a basic distrust of military.
The Moonbats did the same thing down in Olympia, WA. They declared themselves a “nuclear free zone” which essentially means it costs the city more for something because they don’t do business with any company the develops or is engaged in the production of nuclear weapons. The Nuclear Submarine that is named for the city is also not welcome in Olympia’s port. In Seattle, they are also engaged in discouraging recruitment.
Fortunately for them and the Moonbats in San Francisco, every member of the military swears to:
“…defend the constitution of the United States, against all enemies, foreign and domestic…”
In other words, despite the idiocy of the left-wing extremists, they fall under the same protection as the rest of us. They will be defended along with everyone else, even though they seem not to deserve it.
And I wouldn’t advocate any other position, but sometimes, you just wish some people could suffer (even if just a little bit) some consequences for their ignorance.
Oh, and memo to O’Reilly:
Just a few words of advice, oh bloviating one:
Don’t let your alligator mouth overload your lizard ass.
UPDATE:
My friend Ken Bingham over at Oblogatory Anecdotes seems to disagree. He's siding with O'Reilly on this one.
Bill O’Reilly is absolutely correct. San Francisco should not expect our military to come to their aid in any crisis. The city has effectively told our military to take a hike so we as a country should do the same. Let them defend themselves if that is the way they want it.
San Franciscans defending themselves! I wonder if they have a Whips and Chains Brigade? They certainly won't be using guns!

Yes the military will stay even where they are unwanted. Just look at Europe! Isn't it amazing though that Iraq is more welcoming of our troops than San Francisco, one of our own cities?
