How do we fight perception? Ever read something like this?
Mr. Bush recently strolled through the ruins of the City of Baghdad after a major Iraqi Resistance attack. Reuters naturally reported that the public applauded him energetically and shouted "Good old George! Keep it up!" When one asked him about peace, he answered: "After we have won!" One could find that impressive, if one did not know him better. But we know him. We know it is all a front, that he sees no way out, and that he is so far into his criminal policies that there is no way back any longer. He looks strong, but has nothing left, and can only hope for a miracle.
There will not be a miracle. Luck is always on the side of him who has earned it, and history in the end has always sided with those fighting for high ideals who are not willing to give up. Mr. Bush is not such an idealist. He represents a rotten and corrupt world. He is a man of the 19th century who drapes himself with the symbols of the 20th century, hoping thereby to win the battles of the 21st century. This is a world of unlimited individual profiteering at the cost of other people and nations. It has been replaced in Europe by new ways of building nations. The future is theirs. A believing, sacrificing youth is gathered under its banners. This youth will win not only because it is well armed; it will win because it is young, because it represents a revolution, because it has mobilized powerful and dynamic forces that can no longer be resisted. The wheel of history can not be held back, not even by Mr. Bush. In his more rational moments, he probably realizes that he is fighting for a lost cause, that his time is past, that he has no hope of catching up.
He is in fact one of those people who always wants evil, but nonetheless does good. He gave our revolution the decisive final push. Were it not for him, it probably would have taken much more time to reach completion than it now will. In the end, we really have to thank him. Because of him, we will need only as many months to reach our goal as we otherwise would have needed in years, or even decades.
There is no point in trying to convince him of that. He belongs to those stubborn people who can only be convinced by the facts. Let us bring about those facts.
You’ve all heard of “The Big Lie Theory” and the quote ““If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” It’s often attributed to Joseph Goebbels, the evil master Nazi Propagandist. (No one seems to no when or where he said it or wrote it. I don’t know that he said it or if it came from someone explaining his technique)
He did write an article in 1941 accusing Churchill of using such a tactic, but the quote is not there. In fact, the above is a quote from that article. I changed references of Churchill to Bush and I changed the century numbers but all else is word for word. Except for some mid 20th century wording choices, it reads like it just came from an op-ed piece from the New York Times or a nationally syndicated columnist.
Goebbels may or may not have said it, but he practiced it, even to the point off accusing Churchill as being its author.
We are under a relentless barrage from the left. We are under attack by the big lie. Lie after lie is told and the press exploits every possible chance to spread it. We are inundated by the accusations of corruption. Not just the trumped-up indictment of Tom Delay by Ronnie “Hollywood” Earle. That’s just one small piece of the picture. The war is all about oil and to make Bush’s oil buddies even richer. Allegations of massive voter fraud, Halliburton, and corruption keep cropping up. It doesn’t matter if any of it is true, it just matters that the themes are kept in the public eye. Perception – It’s all about perception.
The Democrats have nothing to offer but a Goebbles manufactured perception. They haven’t offered any solutions. They accuse, they denigrate and they lie, but as a Political Party, they offer nothing more than the same old bromides they offered in the 60’s and 70’s. They didn’t work then and they won’t work now.
I’m not sure how we combat it. The left controls the media. (I know, the extreme Left-Wing – Read outright Commies – thinks the New York Times is somehow Pro-Bush.) They control the Movies, the Television and to a large extent, the news.
I don’t think there is some organized vast Left-Wing Conspiracy per se. I do believe the Party sets the tone and they rely on their loyalists to carry the message. We are left to prove the negative.
The old adage, “A good Prosecutor could indict a ham sandwich.” isn’t just about Tom Delay. The Democrats have succeeded in convincing people the entire conservative movement is under some kind of “indictment” and we are left trying to prove our innocence against every kind of made-up accusation.
We have a huge job to do or by 2008, we will be the minority party. A job, I’m not even sure we can do. Somehow, someway, we need to expose the liberal lies for the propaganda they are. We need to fight The Big Lie.

Except for the third paragraph, it does sound like something right out of the New York Times editorial page. It is true however, that the actual news coverage that the NYT made in the months leading up to the Iraq War was so inaccurate that they were later forced to apologize for repeating White House propaganda without fact-checking.
IMO, the way to win in 2006 and 2008 is to admit that Bush has made some pretty big mistakes and distance the party from him. That strategy almost worked for Gore after Clinton, and Clinton's approval ratings were higher than Bush's are now. Casting Bush and DeLay as party hijackers instead of leaders should stop the scandals from infecting the rest of the party.

For this to be an accurate comparison, Bush would have to rise to the level of Winston Churchill.
He barely makes it to Warren G Harding.

It wasn't about comparisons, it was about the big lies the Democrats tell. Learn to read.
