NEW ORLEANS - It was just after midnight Friday morning and McChord Air Force base south of Tacoma bustled as airmen prepared a C-17 transport plane for an evacuation flight to New Orleans.
I work at McChord AFB. I work with the engines off-wing and the associated Engine Handling Support Equipment. We ship the bad engines out for overhaul, we recieve the repaired engines from the overhaul facility and we store the engines until needed. We do occaisional maintenance and repair of the engines under our control. Mostly, we maintain the support equipment. We also maintain the palletized seating equipment that the refugees will be sitting on during their flights.
I'm proud to be part of the folks at McChord that keep them flying.
The weary evacuees boarded the aircraft with polite words of thanks to the airmen from McChord and expressed happiness at simply being alive.
And I thank them too. These are dedicated young men and women. They are some of America;s Best!
I'm also also mindful of the Air Guard and Guard troops on the ground. I appricate them more than they could ever know. God bless them and their efforts - both on the ground and in the air.
