From NARAL:
John Roberts Sided with Operation Rescue, Convicted Clinic Bomber and Anti-Choice Extremists
Summary:
In Bray v. Alexandria Women’s Health Clinic, Supreme Court nominee John Roberts, then Principal Deputy Solicitor General, co-authored and submitted for the United States an amicus curiae brief, siding with the notorious anti-choice group Operation Rescue and some of the world’s most aggressive and violent anti-choice extremists,
Michael Bray, Randall Terry, Patrick Mahoney, and others. In the amicus brief and during oral argument, John Roberts maintained that Operation Rescue’s unlawful behavior and “military-style tactics” used to block women from accessing reproductive-health clinics did not amount to discrimination against women and that a civil rights remedy was inappropriate.
What NARAL is doing is loathsome. It is phony and cheap. It is downright despicable. These people are creeps. This really ought to be against the law. What they are trying to infer is that Judge Roberts supports violence against abortion clinics and nothing, and I mean NOTHING, could be further from the truth!!!!
He, as a deputy Solicitor General, for his employer (The United States Government), filed a “Friend of the Court Brief” that said Operation Rescue’s tactics of protesting abortion clinics (sidewalk protests and indeed, some civil disobedience) were not civil rights matters. They were questions concerning free speech, the right to assemble, and trespassing. In other words, did they have the right to peacefully picket? The answer for any group should be yes. Do they have the right to block clinics? Probably not. That would be against the law and would involve a trespassing charge.
Judge Roberts would not support violence. Regardless of his views, violence is and always has been against the law. Hurting people, blowing up things and stopping someone from entering a clinic is not legal. They never were and Judge Roberts, I’m 100% positive, would also agree.
The attempt here to depict a good and decent man as someone who supports violence, vandalism and murder is indicative of the left’s attempt to thwart the constitutional process at any cost – even if they have to tell the most despicable lies.
NARAL should be held responsible for their crass and despicable behavior in some way. Free speech has limits and if NARAL’s accusations don’t cross over the line of libel, then the damn well should. Judge Roberts should sue these people for every dime they are worth if he isn’t confirmed.
